We are a little late to this as it has been reported quite a few times, but HB 1111 is being proposed by Del. Adam Ebbin (D-49) to allow school systems in Virginia to set the starting date of the school year. In 1986, the legislature passed a law requiring all public school systems to begin classes after Labor Day. This was sponsored by the Paramount King’s Dominion theme park and is often referred to as the “King’s Dominion Law,” because it maintains the length of the summer tourism season and is good for business. Kings Dominion is fighting HB 1111… to ensure it has its rightful say in state school policy.
